NEW YORK CITY, NY - Just months after being fired, a former FDNY firefighter has passed away. His widow and small children have been left with nothing.
On April 15, 36-year-old Derek Floyd suffered a fatal heart attack. Floyd was let go from the fire department in December as part of NYC’s efforts to free up budget space in order to help mitigate the strain on the city due to the illegal migrant crisis.
The goal for the city is to cut $74 million from the FDNY budget by 2025 and reallocate those funds to housing and services for the illegals that have flooded the city by the tens of thousands.
According to the New York Post, FDNY sources stated that “Floyd was one of about 10 fire department employees who had been on ‘long-term duty,’ either injured on the job and given office work or out sick for an extended period- and fired weeks before Christmas.”
“Floyd had been just shy of vesting additional medical benefits for his family and more than $600,000 worth of death benefits when he was booted, leaving his family with nothing despite his years of service,” The Post reported.
Following his termination, Floyd began working for a nonprofit supporting veterans, however along with limited benefits, the hours limited his time with his family and the pay was minimal compared to his FDNY pay.
“He used to be so present for, like, our kids and stuff. Being a firefighter was something he was really passionate about. He was really a big-time, like, family person, he was all about his kids,” Floyd’s widow, Cristine, said.
“If Derek would have stayed on, he would have had a life insurance policy by now with the FDNY. That would have helped out financially because right now, it’s really bad. I’m honestly swimming in a lot of debt,” Cristine continued.
As part of the ongoing effort to cut FDNY funding, the number of “long-term duty” staff that will be let go remains unknown.
FDNY is not the only city program facing huge cuts in the name of catering to the illegal immigrant crisis. The NYC Department of Education was slated to lose around $547 million in funding. However, according to the mayor’s executive budget, those funds have been restored.
“What disturbs me the most is that the FDNY is understaffed by hundreds of firefighters. Terminating Floyd was absolutely unnecessary. He had an important job and the FDNY actually needed him in that unit. He was terminated so the department could prove that they were making cuts. He deserved better,” Andrew Ansbro, President of the Uniformed Firefighter Association, said.
Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh released a statement saying, “We are heartbroken over the passing of former Probationary Firefighter Derek Floyd, and will explore all financial, legal, and legislative options to help his family and ensure they have the support they need during this time.”
In addition to his service to his community through the NYFD, Floyd is also a Marine veteran. He served three tours of duty in the Middle East. The least that anyone can do, including the FDNY and NYC, is honor him and his service to our country and his community by making sure that his family is taken care of. Instead of taking care of those in this country illegally.
