Master Corporal Sandra E. Rogers, Aiken Department of Public Safety, South Carolina, Killed In the Line of Duty
At a press conference Saturday night, the Aiken Department of Public Safety released the following statement.
“It is with profound sadness I must report to the Citizens of Aiken, another officer has been murdered in the line of duty in Aiken this morning. Master Corporal Sandra E. Rogers, 49 of Aiken was gunned down responding to a call from a concerned citizen of suspicious activity at Eustis Park just after 7:30A.M.”
“Master Corporal Rogers was an invaluable street cop who exemplified the model of a Public Safety Officer. Master Corporal Rogers was a highly skilled investigator and senior patrol officer on her shift. Please keep the Rogers family and Aiken Public Safety in your prayers as once again we deal with this tragic loss.”
A suspect is in custody following the shooting of Rogers. The State Law Enforcement Division says 26-year-old Joshua Tremaine Jones was arrested Saturday, hours after the shooting was reported near a local park.
The Aiken Public Safety Office says officers were responding to a report of suspicious activity involving two cars, and that Rogers was shot after stopping one of the vehicles.
This is the second time an Aiken police officer has been shot in just over a month. Officer Scotty Richardson was shot and killed on Dec. 20.
