PEORIA, AZ— On Sunday, Harkins Theaters in Arizona hosted release party events at locations across the state to celebrate the launch of "Dog Man," a children’s animated film that tells the story of Dog Man, a hero born from the comic-book fusion of a Police K9 handler and his K9 partner.
The Dog Man film, produced by Dreamworks and based on Dav Pilkey's children’s books, follows the story of the titular Dogman, who, according to Pilkey’s website, is “part dog, part man, and ALL HERO!” The film covers the storyline of several of the serialized novels.
“When Greg the police dog and his cop companion are injured on the job, a life-saving surgery changes the course of history, and Dog Man is born," Pilkey explains. "With the head of a dog and the body of a human, this heroic hound has a real nose for justice. But can he resist the call of the wild to answer the call of duty?”
The event, attended by 100-200 families prominently featured an appearance from the Peoria Police Department’s Community Relations team led by Sergeant Araceli “Shelly” Montes, accompanied by K9 Rex and his handler, Officer J. Smith, who greeted the children and families and stood for photos with moviegoers who also had the chance to pose with the eponymous animated hero.
The Peoria PD team answered questions from curious youngsters and handed out junior badges and fun educational materials regarding policing.
Harkins Theaters wrote in a post to Instagram, “A GRRReat day was had by SUPA guests at the Dog Man Movie Party at Harkins Park West today! PLUS: Reporting for duty were some special guests from @peoriapoliceaz, including K-9 Rex! Guests got the chance to chat with local law enforcement, snap some SUPA pics and fashion their own SUPAhero masks before seeing @dreamworksdogman on the BIG screen.”
In a statement emailed to Law Enforcement Today, Sergeant Montes wrote,
“The Peoria Police Department was honored to be part of the Dog Man Movie Party at Harkins Park West, a fantastic event that brought families together for a fun-filled day. With 450 tickets sold, it was incredible to see so many children and their families come out to enjoy the highly anticipated Dog Man movie, based on the beloved Scholastic book series.
We were especially excited to have K9 Rex and his handler, Officer J. Smith, in attendance, giving us a great opportunity to interact with our local youth. Events like these allow us to continue strengthening the bond of trust with our community while sharing special moments with the families we serve.
We appreciate Harkins Theaters for hosting this wonderful event and look forward to more opportunities to connect with our community in the future!”
