NEW DELHI, INDIA – Police in New Delhi were reportedly able to solve the murder of a 44-year-old woman that occurred earlier in January with the assistance of A.I. tools used to enhance the image quality of CCTV video which reportedly captured footage of the three suspects now in police custody.
On January 10th, a woman identified as 44-year-old Rachna Yadav was fatally shot in the New Delhi residential area of Shalimar Bagh, with CCTV footage reportedly capturing imagery of three potential suspects behind the act. Investigators were reportedly working with shoddy image quality at the onset of the investigation, proving difficult to identify potential suspects.
Investigators at first worked with what available information they had to get a lead on a motive or possible suspects, such as interviewing witnesses, gathering phone records possibly related to the incident, reviewing family history and property records, as well as reviewing various I.P. (internet protocol) data.
However, a senior police official with the Delhi Police noted that through the application of novel A.I. tools used to enhance image quality, investigators were quickly able to identify the three suspects they believe to be behind the shooting.
“It was during this process when investigators decided to use artificial intelligence tools to enhance blurred CCTV visuals,” the senior police official stated, adding, “After improving the footage quality, police were able to generate clearer images of suspects on a motorcycle. One suspect was identified as Nikhil, a resident of Haryana’s Panipat.”
Aside from the 22-year-old Nikhil, police also identified the alleged accomplices as 23-year-old Sumit and 33-year-old Bharat Yadav.
Authorities say that the identifying and subsequent apprehension of three suspects also shed light on the motive behind the murder of Rachna, who served as a Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA) president of her neighborhood, as Bharat was a fugitive wanted for the murder of Rachna’s husband back in 2023. Rachna was reportedly slated to testify against Bharat in court regarding her husband’s 2023 murder.
The trio were reportedly apprehended in various raids conducted in Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Bihar, with Nikhil and Bharat eventually being found in the latter’s Katihar district. Sumit was later apprehended after Nikhil identified him by name to authorities, according to officials.
Upon police interviews of the suspects, Nikhil reportedly admitted that Bharat approached him days before the murder of Rachna, where Bharat allegedly voiced concerns about her upcoming testimony potentially leading to his conviction in her husband’s 2023 murder. From there, authorities say Nikhil “roped in Sumit” into the alleged scheme.
