JUNEAU, AK - Authorities in Juneau, Alaska, say that a family who was cleaning out the residence of a late relative earlier in July made a startling discovery in a chest freezer on the property where the human remains of a suspected adult male were found. While not yet confirmed, local authorities suspect the human remains may belong to an unspecified family member.
On July 19, Juneau Police officers were dispatched to a residence located off the 6500 block of Glacier Highway at approximately 8 p.m. after receiving a call from an individual who reported discovering possible human remains while clearing out a chest freezer within a late relative’s property.
Authorities say the individual who called police explained they had experienced a recent death in the family and were clearing out the late relative’s home when they stumbled upon the chest freezer inside a locked outdoor shed. Officers at the scene confirmed the contents inside the chest freezer were human remains. The deceased is believed to have been aged anywhere between 50 and 80 years old at the time of death.
In a press release issued two days after the discovery, the Juneau Police Department said a “preliminary identification has been made, and investigators believe the remains may be those of an adult male family member.” Officials added that they are still awaiting confirmation from the State Medical Examiner’s Office.
Authorities said it remains unclear how long the body had been inside the freezer. They also noted that no missing persons reports have been linked to the remains and that there is currently no known threat to the public.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police have not said whether any suspects are being sought. A cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy.
