STOCKTON, CA - Four people have been killed and 11 injured after a mass shooting at a child's birthday party on Saturday, November 29.
Investigators with the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office believe that the shooting was targeted, KCRA reported. Heather Brent, a sheriff's office spokesperson, said that the ages of those who were killed were eight, nine, 14, and 21. The shooting took place just before 6 p.m. at a banquet hall in the 1900 block of Lucile Avenue, where a child's party was happening.
Brent said there were between 100 and 150 people in attendance at the party. The suspects are still at large, according to the sheriff's office. Brent would not comment on a possible gang connection to the shooting or share more details about the victims.
Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento confirmed it was treating three adults, who were in stable condition. The Stockton Police Department, Manteca Police Department, and the FBI are also involved in the investigation. Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi said that the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office will lead the investigation since it happened in the county's jurisdiction.
Within the city limits of Stockton, homicides have been trending down this year. As of last week, there were 34, compared to 46 for the same period in 2024, police said.
"Families should be together instead of at the hospital, standing next to their loved one, praying that they survived," the mayor said. She urged people with information to call Crime Stoppers at 209-956-0600. Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee also released a statement, saying in part, "Tonight, my heart is heaving in a way that's hard to put into words. As Vice Mayor of Stockton and as someone who grew up in this community, I am devastated."
Residents who live nearby said they heard gunshots for what felt like one minute. They also said it sounded like multiple people were firing. They said then they heard people screaming for ambulances. Stockton-area faith leaders and community members are planning to hold a vigil in Stockton.
Detectives are still working to identify a possible motive. "If you have any information as to this individual, reach out immediately. If you are this individual, turn yourself in immediately," San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas said.
The Youth Peace & Justice Foundation, which was created after the deadly school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, said it will offer a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of a suspect or suspects.
