CHILLICOTHE, OH— The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) told reporters Thursday that Corrections Officer Andrew Lansing passed away as a result of his injuries sustained in “an inmate assault,” at the Ross Correctional Institution in Chillicothe in the early hours of Christmas day.
As reported by The New York Post, The Ohio State Highway Patrol told reporters that inmate Rashawn Cannon, 27, presently imprisoned for felonious assault and weapon under disability charges and slated for release in 2030 was involved in the assault that eventually took Lansing’s life.
In a statement released following the deadly assault, Director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction Annette Chambers-Smith said, “It is with great sadness that I confirm the tragic death of Correction Officer Andrew Lansing following an inmate assault that occurred at Ross Correctional Institution this morning.”
Chambers-Smith reflected on Lansing’s long tenure with the Department and called him a well-respected officer. She stated that his “untimely death, on Christmas Day, is heartbreaking for his family, the entire Ross Correctional Institution family, and our agency as a whole.”
“Officer Lansing was loved by his colleagues and known to be a great support for his fellow RCI staff. We ask that you keep Officer Lansing’s family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers at this devastating and tragic time,” she continued.
According to WSYX, Chambers-Smith revealed to reporters that Lansing was alone in a guard shack in the middle of the facility’s prison yard when Cannon attacked him. The shack allows guards to shelter in bad weather or take notes and its doors are always unlocked.
"Normally, at this time of day, there would be movement going to the chow hall at this time of day, so, for example, Cannon's unit was released to go to the dining hall, which is why he was on the yard he veered away from going to the dining hall, and instead went to where officer Lansing was working, and attacked him brutally.”
She confirmed to reporters that Cannon was not armed and added that Lansing had filed complaints against Cannon in April on charges of disrespect, threats, and disobedience from a direct order.
Lansing had elected to work on Christmas Day so that his colleagues could take the time off with their families.
The National Fraternal Order of Police wrote in a statement, “The inmate responsible has been transferred, but that doesn’t change the reality of this senseless act. Our thoughts are firmly with the officer’s family during this devastating time. This incident underscores the urgent need for better protections for those who serve in our correctional facilities.”
