PROVIDENCE, RI - A gunman dressed in all black killed at least two people and wounded nine others in a classroom at Brown University on Saturday, December 13, during final exams.
Officials said all 10 people who were shot (including the two who died) were students, and an 11th person was injured by fragments, NBC10 reported. The alleged shooter, who is being described as a "person of interest" by police, was taken into custody Sunday morning, December 14, after he remained at large overnight.
The suspect was in dark clothing and was last seen leaving the engineering building where the attack happened, said Timothy O'Hara, deputy chief of Providence police. Security footage showed the suspect walking away from the building, but his face was not visible. Some witnesses reported that the man, who could be in his 30s, may have been wearing a camouflage mask, O'Hara said.
The alleged gunman had a "unique characteristic" on the gun reportedly used in the shooting, PEOPLE reported. The weapon was found when he was taken into custody. The alleged suspect's identity has not yet been released to the public, nor have any charges been filed. Col. Oscar Perez, the chief of police in Providence, said that authorities are not searching for any other perpetrators at this time.
Brown, an Ivy League school, first announced that there was an active shooter near Barus & Holley, a computer lab and engineering building on campus, shortly after 4 p.m. O'Hara said it is "unknown" how the individual entered the building where the shooting took place.
Of the nine people injured in the shooting, one was in critical condition, six were in critical but stable condition, and two were stabilized. In a news conference on December 14, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said that one person had been discharged. The identities of the deceased and injured have yet to be made public.
"Everybody's reeling, and we have a lot of recovery ahead of us," said University President Christina Paxson. "Our community's strong and we'll get through it, but it's devastating." Perez would not say whether or how the person was affiliated with the university, according to CBS News.
A law enforcement source said that the person of interest is not currently enrolled as a student at Brown University and that he was arrested overnight at an area hotel without incident. Two law enforcement sources said that the person of interest had two guns in his possession when he was taken into custody within the Hampton Inn Hotel.
On Sunday, university officials said remaining classes and exams for the semester have been cancelled, and students are free to leave campus. Those who remain on campus will have access to services and support.
"At this time, it is essential that we focus our efforts on providing care and support to the members of our community as we grapple with the sorrow, fear, and anxiety that are impacting all of us right now," Provost Francis Doyle said in a statement.
