SCOTTSDALE, AZ - A Scottsdale detective has died following an on-duty incident with a firearm.
Detective Ryan So had just finished a search warrant and arrest operation and was unloading equipment when a rifle fell out of a bag that he was moving. The rifle reportedly discharged when it hit the pavement, according to AZ Central.
Detective So was struck, and despite fellow detectives rendering aid at the scene, he succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
The Scottsdale Police Department (SPD) made their announcement on social media late Thursday night.
“It is with an unbelievably heavy heart we announce that Detective Ryan So #1473 has succumbed to duty-related injuries sustained earlier this evening and has passed away," the agency wrote. "Detective So honorably served the City of Scottsdale and the Scottsdale Police Department for 9 years and ended his watch as a member of the Special Assignments Unit. Detective So also served in the United States Navy. This is an unimaginable tragedy for both Ryan’s family and his police family at SPD. Our thoughts are with Detective So’s family, his team, and everyone across our police department.”
SPD also released a separate statement reading, “The loss of Detective So is deeply felt throughout the entire community. We will forever honor his sacrifice and remember his legacy as a hero who dedicated his life to serving and protecting others.”
Additonal information on So’s death was released by the Mesa Police Department late Friday night in partnership with the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team.
Detective So leaves behind a wife and three children.
