How an Alleged Somali Pirate Traveled From the High Seas to U.S. Soil

WASHINGTON, DC – Earlier in April, Homeland Security announced the apprehension of an illegal alien from Somalia who apparently has a history of alleged prior criminal conduct in the United States as well as acts of piracy amid the Indian Ocean.

According to a press release from Homeland Security, known Somali pirate Said Jama Ahmed was apprehended by a U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) agent on the evening of April 14th after he was found having entered the United States illegally via the U.S./Canada border.

USBP was reportedly made aware of Ahmed after a an off-duty Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer spotted the individual making his was toward the northern border while carrying a backpack.

At the time of Ahmed’s apprehension, it was found that he had an active warrant for charges pertaining to falsely making, using, and forging a passport while also having reportedly been involved in a 2012 piracy incident in the Gulf of Aden.

The piracy incident reportedly occurred on March 10th, 2012, and involved an Indian vessel that had been allegedly hijacked by ten “armed pirates,” according to Homeland Security.

United States Navy members aboard the U.S.S. Halsey responded to a distress call from the crew on the vessel, with a Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) team boarding the vessel and taking Ahmed and the nine other alleged pirates into custody.

Ahmed had first entered the United States back in September of 2022, with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) later encountering him in 2024 during an executed search warrant related to fraudulent documents.

Homeland Security Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis issued a statement regarding Ahmed’s apprehension, claiming the prior administration’s “weak” policies on border security and immigration enforcement allowed Ahmed to avoid accountability for his 2024 criminal allegations.

“Weak Biden Administration border policies allowed this illegal alien to enter and remain in the country despite his multiple law enforcement encounters. We are thankful for our hardworking U.S. CBP officers and Canadian officials for their cooperation in arresting this individual. DHS will continue to work to arrest criminal illegal aliens to protect the American homeland from all threats,” Assistant Secretary Bis stated.
