Texas Uber Health driver arrested for sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl

PLANO, TX— A rideshare driver for Uber Health, Robert Johnson III, 31, was placed under arrest on July 15th on aggravated sexual assault charges after he allegedly assaulted a 12-year-old girl he was transporting.

According to a press release from the Plano Texas Police Department, "On July 9th, 2024, around 2:00 p.m., Johnson responded to a pickup request in Frisco, Texas, where he picked up an unaccompanied minor. Johnson pulled off the road in the 4200 block of Legacy Drive, where Johnson sexually assaulted the 12-year-old rider. The next day, the child disclosed the assault to their mother, and a police report was filed."

In a follow-up comment urging followers not to shame the child's parents, the department added that the unnamed child was being transported from a medical facility by Uber Health after the mother was assured that Uber Health was safe.

During a probable cause hearing three days later, a Collin County Judge issued a warrant for Johnson, who was arrested and booked into the county jail on a $200,000 bond.

Reporting from Fox 4 News stated that according to investigators Johnson picked up the young girl from a therapy facility in Frisco, TX to transport her home to Plano. A source within the Police Department said the conversation between Johnson and the girl became extremely graphic. Officers said he then pulled off the road in Plano and made the girl move to the front seat of the car where he sexually assaulted her in a parking lot.

He allegedly told the girl before dropping her off that if she told anyone about the incident there would be "issues." The victim reported the assault to her therapist the next day.

Police Officer Jennifer Chapman told Fox 4, "I think it's very brave that the child came forward to discuss what happened. And we hope that more children do."

At the facility where the girl was treated, she explained,

"This facility and Uber Health work in partnership to get people who are using their facility to and from their location safely. The mother thought that she was doing the right thing and that they would do the right thing. Unfortunately, no matter how things are done right, there are predators that are going to infiltrate these systems."

A report from NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth revealed that Johnson was released on bond Monday. An Uber spokesman told CBS News, "This monstrous behavior has no place in our society or on the Uber platform. We take reports of this nature very seriously and have permanently banned the driver. We have been in touch with the Plano Police Department regarding their investigation."

The outlet noted that according to Uber's terms of use, "Accounts used to transport unaccompanied minors may be deactivated," however, Dallas is one of the 21 cities nationwide where Uber has rolled out  Uber for teens accounts. The limited teen accounts are, according to Uber, "the only authorized way for teens aged 13-17 to use the Uber platform with consent from their legal guardian."
