PORTSMOUTH, VA - A Portsmouth police officer was shot and injured during a domestic incident Monday and the suspect has been placed under arrest.
Rakeem Walter Christian, 26, is now facing charges of aggravated attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, shooting in the commission of a felony, shooting with the intent to maim or kill, the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and felony child neglect.
Portsmouth police responded to a potential domestic hostage situation call on Monday evening according to WAVY after they received a tip from another jurisdiction’s agency at approximately 8:00 p.m. local time.
According to the outlet, arriving officers encountered Christian when he opened the door with a handgun and immediately fired on them, striking an officer in the lower area of his torso per court documents.
The officers pulled back from the residence and created a secure perimeter around the residence while they awaited backup units. Portsmouth Police Department spokeswoman Elexcia Washington told 13 News Now, "After the shots were fired, our officers retreated to set up a perimeter.”
Once additional units arrived on the scene, Christian was apprehended around 8:20 p.m. without further incident. No officers fired their weapons during the incident.
Portsmouth officers executed a search warrant and reportedly located a .40 Smith and Wesson with a spent casing which failed to eject from the firearm in the bedroom of Christian’s three-year-old child.
Court records indicated that the stricken officer was transported to an area hospital and as of Tuesday he was released and expected to make a full recovery.
