LOS ANGELES, CA - A man wanted by police after plowing a stolen flatbed truck into several cars as he weaved in and out of Southern California traffic during a wild high-speed police pursuit, ended with police piling on top of the reckless driver as he attempted to walk away from his trail of destruction.
According to the New York Post, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said that the incident began around 2:41 p.m. near the Harbor Freeway and Adams Street in downtown Los Angeles on Friday, March 28th.
The hour-long pursuit, which was captured on SkyCal footage, showed the erratic driver topping 100 mph as he dangerously traveled on local streets and freeways to Long Beach, often against traffic sideswiping cars and barreling into others that blocked his escape. Footage shared by NBC4 shows that at one point, the driver narrowly struck a bus at a busy intersection in Pico Rivera before hopping a curb and fleeing on a sidewalk to avoid cars during the mad rush.
The driver continued to evade capture, moving through Santa Fe Springs, Norwalk, and other communities on Interstate 605. While doing this, the driver would occasionaly drive dangerously through the shoulder of the crowded roadway, clipping multiple cars. According to ABC7, as he made his way into Long Beach, the driver plowed the flatbed truck into the rear of at least three vehicles, pushing his way through the wreckage and getting a flat tire.
Despite a flat front tire, the suspect continued speeding, struggling to maintain control and striking more vehicles before ultimately smashing into an SUV and a van as he ran a red light.
The police pursuit came to an abrupt stop when the driver blew a red light and smashed into a least two cars, sending him off the road where he crashed into a metal rail in the parking lot of a Sherwin-Williams Paints on Termino Avenue. The unidentified suspect exited the totaled car and casually escaped on foot before nearly a dozen officers took him to the ground a few blocks from the crash site.
The suspect was arrested five minutes after the pursuit ended, around 3:45 p.m. Officials said at leat one of the officers was injured during the struggle and was later taken from the scene in an ambulance.
The driver of the SUV that was violently struck by the suspect at the end of the pursuit was also treated by Long Beach paramedics and taken to a hospital in an unknown condition. Paramedics were also seen treating the suspect at the scene for unknown injuries. Police said that the truck was stolen from an auto body shop in South L.A.
The owner of the shop said that he had dropped off some parts and went inside to get the money but left the truck running in their lot. Ricardo Colindres said, "He came on the property. He actually went into the auto body shop and got in my car." Colindres still had his phone in the truck, allowing the vehicle's location to be tracked. Charges have not yet been filed and the suspect's name has not been released.
In a separate incident, a boy was killed and two other people were taken into custody early Friday morning, March 28th, related to a high-speed police pursuit that ended with a crash near Los Angeles International Airport. According to the Daily Breeze, the pursuit began around 1:39 a.m. when officers with the LAPD attempted to stop a suspected drunken driver in a red kia SUV. The driver, however, refused to stop.
Officers followed west on Century Boulevard toward the airport before the SUV crashed into a blue Honda sedan at Sepulveda and Century boulevards. Two SUV occupants fled on foot but were quickly apprehended and taken into custody. Police said a boy, in the SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene. An occupant in the Honda sedan was taken to a hospital in an unknown condition. The incident remains under investigation.
