NEW YORK CITY, NY - The NYPD is actively investigating the fatal stabbing of a 36-year-old woman that occurred earlier in June inside the victim’s Brooklyn home. Authorities have yet to reveal a potential motive or suspects sought in the case.
On June 20 at approximately 9:00 a.m., authorities discovered the body of 36-year-old Maria Santos Flores inside her Bay Ridge neighborhood home off of 85th Street. The victim reportedly had her throat slit, with neighbors telling investigators they’d heard screams emanating from the home prior to the discovery.
CBS News reported that the victim’s sister discovered the body and immediately called 911 before having to eventually break the news to Flores’ husband who was working at the time of the incident. There were reportedly no signs of burglary at the residence, with family members of the deceased emphasizing they can’t think of anyone who would’ve wanted to kill Flores.
One area resident who spoke with local news outlet ABC 7 regarding the incident stated, “My mother lives about nine blocks from here and the police went to her house looking for camera footage because they say the perp ran along 5th Avenue.”
No arrests or persons of interest have been announced by officials as of this writing. Santos Hernandez, the victim’s husband, told the New York Daily News that police are actively gathering information on the case but haven’t afforded much insight into the investigation. The couple had been married for three years before Flores’ untimely passing, with the deceased leaving behind an 18-year-old son and 14-year-old daughter.
Residents in Bay Ridge are reasonably alarmed with the incident, with one local describing the neighborhood as “one of the last community neighborhoods in Brooklyn,” with others telling local news outlets that violent crime is exceedingly rare in the area.
