Maryland: Honduran National Arrested After Head-On Crash Leaves Victim Fighting for Life

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, MD - The carnage caused by illegal aliens continues to pile up. In late November, a Honduran illegal caused a head-on crash in this Maryland county, leaving a U.S. citizen hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, according to a press release issued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

ICE Baltimore arrested Kevin Alexis Mendez-Ortiz, whose age was not provided, on Nov. 25 during a targeted immigration enforcement operation in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Mendez-Ortiz entered the country illegally in 2022 under the Biden administration’s open border policy.

“This tragic incident underscores why ICE remains steadfast in its mission to identify, apprehend, and remove illegal aliens who pose a threat to public safety,” ICE Baltimore acting Field Office Director Jeremy Bacon said. “A U.S. citizen suffered devastating injuries because of the reckless behavior of an illegal alien who had no lawful right to be in our country. The Baltimore field office extends our deepest hopes for our fellow citizens’ full and speedy recovery. We will continue working tirelessly to keep our communities safe from individuals who endanger the public through irresponsible and unlawful actions.”

The crash took place on Nov. 9 when Mendez-Ortiz, traveling eastbound on a Maryland roadway, crossed into oncoming traffic in the westbound lane, striking a vehicle head-on. Mendez-Ortiz fled the scene.

A passenger in the westbound vehicle, a woman who has asked to remain anonymous, suffered critical injuries, including broken vertebrae, a broken collarbone, a broken wrist, fractured ribs, injury to her intestines and uterus, a ruptured diaphragm, a collapsed lung, a concussion, and much more. ICE said she faces a “long road to recovery.”

On Nov. 12, Mendez-Ortiz was cited by the Prince George’s County Police Department on a host of charges, including:

  • Failure of the individual to display a license to uniformed police on demand

  • Failure to display the registration card upon demand by a police officer

  • Driving on the highway without a required license and authorization

  • Failure to immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of an accident involving bodily injury

  • Failure to return to or remain at the scene of an accident involving attended vehicle damage

  • Failure of the vehicle driver involved in the accident to give insurance policy information

  • Failure to drive the vehicle on the right half of the roadway

  • Changing lanes when it is unsafe after a hit-and-run vehicle collision

  • Failure to control vehicle speed on the highway to avoid a collision

  • Failure to obey properly placed traffic control device instructions

  • Failure to obey designated lane directions

Mendez-Ortiz was initially arrested by U.S. Border Patrol agents after illegally entering the U.S. near Hidalgo, Texas, on Sept. 30, 2022. He was issued a notice to appear that same day and was cut loose to roam the United States at will on his own recognizance.
