ICE and FBI Snare Violent Murder Fugitive in Early Morning Operation

MIDDLETOWN, NY – A 37-year-old criminal illegal alien from El Salvador, who is a fugitive wanted for murder out of his home country, was apprehended by federal authorities earlier in April during a joint effort conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the FBI within New York’s Hudson Valley region.

On April 13th, ICE New York City Fugitive Operations officers operating out of the Newburgh office partnered with the FBI’s Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force for a 6:00 a.m. targeted operation in Middletown to apprehend Alejandro Perla Cruz. According to the agency, Perla Cruz, who is allegedly an MS-13 gang member, was apprehended by officers during a vehicle stop without incident and is in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.

Agency officials say Perla Cruz entered the United States illegally at an unknown date and time, with the FBI subsequently gaining intel as to the fugitive’s whereabouts six days prior to him being taken into custody. Perla Cruz is currently wanted in El Salvador on charges of murder and drug trafficking, according to the agency.

FBI Assistant Director in Charge James C. Barnacle Jr. issued a statement in tandem with the issued press release, highlighting the crimes Perla Cruz was wanted for in his country of origin while emphasizing the United States will not serve as a harbor for violent fugitives from abroad.

“The FBI’s Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force worked with our federal immigration enforcement partners to arrest this violent foreigner and protect our communities against dangerous criminals living here illegally. The United States is no longer a sanctuary for violent criminals, and the FBI will continue utilizing immigration authorities to safeguard our communities,” Assistant Director Barnacle Jr. stated.

ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) New York City Field Office Director Kenneth Genalo also issued a statement regarding Perla Cruz’s apprehension, reiterating the agency’s mission of expelling these sorts of offenders as “a priority.”

“Protecting New Yorkers from criminal illegal aliens will always be a priority for this office. I am grateful to our officers and our FBI partners for their work in removing this gang member from our streets so he can be returned to his home country to face prosecution for his heinous crimes,” Director Genalo stated.
