South Carolina: 21-Year-Old Pleads Guilty to Murder, Armed Robbery in 2020 Charleston Crime Spree

CHARLESTON, SC - The Ninth Circuit Solicitor's Office announced that a man has pleaded guilty following a 2020 crime spree that left one person dead.

The suspect, 21-year-old Darcellus Fishburne, pleaded guilty to murder, armed robbery, and attempted armed robbery, Ninth Circuit Solicitor's Office spokesperson Ashley Kay said, according to Live5News.

The crime spree began when Fishburne, who was a minor at the time, and two other teenagers were in a recently stolen car and drove from North Charleston to downtown Charleston in the early morning hours on July 17, 2020.

It started when two of the suspects approached a 74-year-old woman on Archdale Street, where she was held at gunpoint while they demanded her money. About 20 minutes later, the same two suspects approached a couple out for a morning walk at the corner of King and Clifford streets.

Police said the teens attempted to rob the couple until they fatally shot the husband, 63-year-old Tom DiLorenzo, as the suspects fled on foot to the waiting stolen car.

His wife, Suzanne Austin, who was the provost and executive vice president of academic affairs at the College of Charleston, was uninjured. Fishburne was charged with the murder of Dilorenzo when he was just 15-years-old, News2 reported.

The two co-defendants, Travis Wilson and Jaylen Grant, were also charged, and their charges remain pending. Fishburne's sentencing date has not yet been announced.
