CHARLOTTE, NC - Authorities have announced that an 18-year-old has been charged in connection with the shooting of a two-year-old that took place in northwest Charlotte back in October.
According to WSOC-TV, on October 12th, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) responded to reports of a shooting that took place at a home on Wildwood Avenue. Upon arriving on scene, officers found a two-year-old girl who had been shot. Police reports state that she was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Doorbell video footage captured a white four-door sedan driving by the home and a suspect leaning out of the rear driver's side window before firing off several rounds. Later, in the investigation, police learned that a second home on Morgan Street was also struck by gunfire. A resident of that home told police that their brother was having issues with an 18-year-old, identified as Damarco Williams, and that this incident could have been a form of retaliation.
Further investigation into the incident revealed that the vehicle used in the incident was stolen. The victim in this case told their mother that Williams had been responsible. On October 16th, a few days later, police found the vehicle parked at a home on Glenrock Drive. As officers approached, all occupants in the vehicle, including Williams, fled before being caught.
Police executed a search of the home in which they found several firearms, one of which belonged to Williams, and shell casings from both shooting scenes came back connected to those firearms.
Police reports state that Williams also admitted to having the keys to the vehicle used in the shooting. Police said due to the time frame of the shootings, the vehicle connection, and a possible motive, Williams has been charged in connection with both shootings. He has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill or inflict serious injuries, felony conspiracy, discharging a weapon into occupied property, and injury to personal property.
According to WBTV, the police confirmed that the arrest of Williams happened on November 11th. Police reports noted that five people were in the home at the time of the shooting, but only the two-year-old was hit with the gunfire. As of this writing, the toddler has been released from the hospital.
Williams was issued a $500,000 bond and was released on November 12th. While awaiting his trial, he will be required to wear an electronic monitoring device.
In a separate incident, two reputed gang members have been charged with attempted murder after a seven-year-old was shot in Harlem, New York. According to ABC7, the gunfire broke out near West 145th Street and Bradhurst Avenue just before 3:00 p.m. on Monday, November 11th. Police said the young child was struck after gang members opened fire in broad daylight.
Surveillance video shows the little girl walking with her father who scooped her up when the shots rang out. Daniel Idowu, 19, and an unidentified 17-year-old are both facing charges of attempted murder. Idowu also faces charges of criminal possession of a weapon.
The young girl was rushed to the hospital by police where she is recovering. She is expected to make a full recovery. Police said nine rounds were fired between the two reputed gang members firing on two rivals at the opposite end of the block. Police said the teens popped out from behind a parked car and started firing into a crowded street.
