MEMPHIS, TN - A 22-year-old woman was shot and killed at the American Cancer Society’s "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" event in Memphis, Tennessee Saturday afternoon.
According to witnesses, the suspect, Jackson Hopper, 26, allegedly pulled up to his ex-girlfriend Ellie Claire Young's Jeep parked outside the Shelby Farms Visitor Center in a white Honda CRV and fired two shots into her vehicle, striking her fatally. According to Fox News, Young exited the vehicle and collapsed. The assailant then reportedly stepped out of his car and shot her once more as she lay bleeding.
Hopper allegedly fled in his vehicle before police could arrive. First responders declared Young dead at the scene. A quick-thinking witness snapped a picture of Hopper's vehicle before he fled, leading police to issue a BOLO alert for the vehicle in nearby jurisdictions.
The suspect was later located and pursued by officers. The pursuit ended with Hopper crashing his vehicle and being placed under arrest, after visibly struggling with the arresting deputies beside his overturned vehicle.
Per Fox13, Hopper has been charged with first-degree murder connected to Young's death. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) told reporters that more charges may be forthcoming as the investigation progresses. His attorney Leslie Ballin told FOX13 told reporters that he has pleaded not guilty.
Sheriff Shannon Beasley of nearby Tipton County told the outlet that Hopper is also facing charges in that jurisdiction for "possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, felony evading, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, reckless driving, resisting arrest and multiple traffic violations."
Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy told Fox13 that his office is asking that Hopper be denied bond. He said in a statement, "The murder of Ellie Young at Shelby Farms Park is a heartbreaking tragedy, and my deepest condolences go out to her family and friends. Due to the severity of this case, our office has requested that no bond be granted pending a hearing.
"Every homicide in our community is a devastating loss, and every victim deserves justice. Miss Young's case underscores the critical need to address the widespread issue of domestic and intimate partner violence. "
