An eight-year-old girl is dead after mother leaves her in a hot car in NC

CHARLOTTE, NC - An eight-year-old girl is dead after being left in a hot car while her mother was at work, and her mother has been arrested.

According to Fox News, the mother’s arrest was announced by the Charlette-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) on Thursday.

Ashlee Stallings, 36, has been charged with child abuse by willful act causing serious injury and involuntary manslaughter in the death of her eight-year-old daughter.

MCPD put out a press release explaining that officers were alerted to the girl in the vehicle around 6:30pm on Wednesday, which read, in part, “Upon arrival, officers located an eight-year-old female in critical condition inside of a vehicle. The victim was transported to the hospital and was later pronounced deceased.

“Upon further investigation it was determined that the victim was left in a vehicle in hot weather conditions and suffered a medical emergency.”

Stalling reportedly left her daughter in the car while she clocked into work.

According to an arrest affidavit, Stalling found her daughter foaming at the mouth and breathing shallowly. She then broke out the back window with a hammer and began driving to a hospital before stopping at a local business to ask for help.

Stalling told police that she knew that her daughter was in the vehicle and that she had left the car running with the air conditioning on. The affidavit said that Stalling “believed the victim turned the car off because she was cold.”

“She admitted she knew the temperature was 94 degrees outside and that she should not have left the victim inside the car alone,” authorities said.

Officials said that the girl died from “a brain herniation due to hyperthermia.”

Stalling made her first appearance in court on Thursday and is currently being held on a $250,000 bond. Her next hearing is scheduled for July 16.

Can’t an eight year old open the door if it got hot in there? No mention of a mental condition the child may have had.
