MARION, IN - The Indiana State Police (ISP) are actively investigating an officer-involved shooting that left the suspect dead. According to Fox 55, the investigation began after officers with the Marion Police Department (MPD) responded to a call for an unwanted person inside that ISP had an active warrant for and a restraining order.
The incident began around 5:30 a.m. at a residence in the 2000 block of West 8th Street on Monday, July 15th. Upon arriving on scene, responding officers said that they found 39-year-old Michael Martel Guy inside of the residence. Police said that Guy resisted arrest and got into a physical altercation with them. As officers tried to arrest the suspect, he took a gun from one of the officer's holsters.
ISP said that after Guy took the gun, an officer deployed his taser. However, the taser was unsuccessful in seizing him. At that point, another Marion officer shot Guy, striking him. Police were attempting to arrest Guy for an invasion of privacy warrant. ISP said that life-saving measures were taken to save him, but Guy died at the scene of the incident.
21 Alive reported that in a statement, Glass said, "During the struggle, Mr. Guy was able to disarm one of the officers by ripping off the duty holster, which contained the handgun, off of his duty belt. One of the city officers then used his department-issued taster, which proved to be ineffective."
According to Fox 59, Steven Glass with ISP wrote in an online post that, "There is no ongoing threat to the public." ISP said that body camera footage of the incident will be reviewed as part of the investigation. Glass said that a woman was reportedly in the home at the time and Guy was an "unwanted guest" in the home.
A family member of Guy knew about his warrant and knew that Guy was in the home. That family member reportedly called into dispatch with this information. ISP said that it is believed that the woman inside of the residence also had a protective order against Guy.
No officers were injured during the incident. The officer who discharged his weapon has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the ISP investigation, which is normal protocol after officer-involved shootings. Scott Hunt, the prosecutor in Grant County, said that this incident continues to be an active investigation.
Officials said that this is the first officer-involved shooting in Marion this year. Marion Mayor Ronald Morrell Jr. said that his prayers go out to those who were involved in the incident. He said, "This is very heavy for our community."
MPD shared the body camera footage on their Facebook page. In the video, Guy can be seen fighting with the police and heard saying, "I'll kill your (expletive)," "I'm about to pull it on your (expletive)," and "I got something for you." While saying these threats, Guy reportedly had already disarmed on of the officers.
The taser is then heart being deployed on Guy as police yell at him to "let it go" and "put it down." Multiple shows are then fired and Guy is seen lying motionless. Hunt said that all of the information from the investigation will be forwarded to the prosecutor's office and that the office will then decide on what charges, if any.
