VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - Authorities with the Virginia Beach Police Department confirmed that a 16-month-old girl was killed after her father allegedly abducted her and her two siblings, who were also injured, when he fled from police and crashed his car on a Maryland interstate highway.
According to NBC News, the incident began on Wednesday, August 14th, at approximately 8:48 p.m. when the Virginia Beach Police Department received a call regarding a stabbing in the 900 block of Jay Are Court. A press release said that responding officers discovered two female victims, one adult and one juvenile, with both of them suffering from multiple stab wounds.
The two female victims were transported to the hospital where they remain in stable condition. Police said that the stabbing incident was domestic related and the suspect has been identified as 36-year-old Dana Plummer. According to authorities, Plummer stabbed the two people before abducting his three children and fleeing the scene.
Immediately following the incident, warrants were issued for Plummer and an Amber Alert was sent out by the Virginia State Police (VSP) for the three missing children. Officials warned that the three children, ages seven, five, and 16-months, were in "extreme danger." VSP said, "The children are believed to have been abducted by Dana Demetrius Plummer, 36, and may be traveling in a black 2024 Honda Passport SUV with temporary Virginia tags: 37555OR."
Almost 24-hours later, authorities were contacted by a citizen who recognized the vehicle from the Amber Alert. State police attempted a traffic stop on Interstate 95 in Fairfax County, but Plummer allegedly refused to stop.
He crashed into two other vehicles, causing his SUV to flip over. The press release says that Plummer was apprehended at the scene and the three juveniles were located. The 16-month-old, identified as Zariyah Plummer, was transported via a helicopter to a local hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries. The occupants in the other vehicles were not injured.
Plummer was hospitalized after the crash. He has been charged with aggravated malicious wounding, parental abduction, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and domestic assault. According to NBC4, Plummer has not yet been charged in Maryland. Major Adam Stachurski of the Maryland State Police said that because the toddler died after the crash, which took place in Maryland, any charges related to that death will come from Maryland.
VBPD Police Chief Paul Neudigate said in a statement, "Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones who are grieving this morning. This is an unimaginable tragedy, and on behalf of the VBPD, I extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by this loss."
The case remains under investigation and if anyone has information related to the incident, police are encouraging them to contact the VBPD Detective Bureau at 757-385-4101 or anonymously through Crime Solvers at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
