BALTIMORE, MD - An elementary school teacher in Baltimore, accused of shooting an officer at a Baltimore County Police precinct on March 13, was reportedly hired as a teacher over one year after he was convicted of a gun crime, having served just thirty days of a three-year sentence.
Reporting from WMAR revealed that Andrew Robert Britt, 27, was hired in December of 2022 just over a year after his conviction for carrying a loaded firearm in his vehicle, and served only 30 days of a three-year sentence with the remaining time suspended.
Surveillance footage cited by the outlet shows a man identified as Britt entering the precinct and speaking with a desk officer via a glass window before moving to the precinct’s parking lot where he was then seen speaking with Officer Smith before opening fire on him. As Smith dove for cover, the suspect then fired at and struck another officer identified as J. Riddick as Smith and a third Officer identified as Officer Wright returned fire striking him. Smith is a 25-year veteran on the force and Wright has been with the force for two years.
Both Officer Riddick and the suspect were wounded in the firefight, with the officer being struck in the lower half of his body while Britt was struck in his abdomen. Britt was last reported as receiving treatment at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Officer Riddick underwent surgery and was released Sunday. The outlet reported that Britt is still employed by the school district and remains on leave.
Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough told WMAR Thursday, “One of our officers… he was actually hit by the subject and, of course, he was transported here to Shock Trauma. Our officers also shot the suspect who was transported to a local hospital."
“When you show up for work and you just simply… you’re walking through the parking lot to go to work or like one of our officers was at the gas pump putting gas in the car getting ready to go home from work, you don’t have on your mind that your life’s going to be in danger in that moment,” McCullough added, noting “It was very clear that this was premeditated.”
Speaking with The Baltimore Sun, a City Schools spokesman referred reporters to administrative regulations prohibiting them from hiring anyone convicted of a crime “involving certain sexual offenses, child sexual abuse, and crimes of violence” and that a “criminal history records check, including fingerprinting, [is required] prior to completion of the hiring process.”
The School system said in a Wednesday statement, “Under Maryland law, not all gun-related charges automatically disqualify an individual from employment with a school system.
“For instance, a firearm-related offense involving a crime of violence would result in immediate disqualification. However, if a charge does not fall under the categories requiring automatic disqualification, City Schools undertakes a thorough review process, consistent with all applicable laws. In Mr. Britt’s case, we conducted the required follow-up in accordance with our established procedures.”
According to The Sun journalist Michelle Richardson, Britt also mentored students in an after-school boxing program.
