Escaped inmate holds women hostage at knifepoint, catches a bullet in the brain from hero officer

MIAMI BEACH, FL - Body camera footage released a year after an officer-involved shooting shows the intense moments leading up to the fatal incident after the officer responded to a hostage situation.

According to WSVN, a single shot by the responding officer saved the lives of a woman and a teenage girl who were being held at gunpoint by an armed man. The incident happened on July 27, 2023, inside of a Victoria's Secret store at 901 Lincoln Road. Police had received a call of a man holding two people hostage inside of the store. The two were identified as a teen and a store employee. After the incident, the man was identified as 29-year-old Darian Young, who was an escaped inmate from New Hampshire.

Responding officers asked everyone inside of the store to "get out" as they tried to secure the scene before going in to save the two women. Body camera footage shows Young holding the teen and the woman by their necks, while officers attempted to use interpersonal communication skills to reason with the armed man. They repeatedly asked him to drop the knife.

Young said, "She will die." A female officer on scene responded by saying, "You're hurting her. She's innocent. You're hurting her. Let's talk. We can do this." A male officer then said, "Let's talk." The female officer added, "Let's talk this through. What do you need from us?" The officers offered to get Young help, if he would just drop the knife. The male officer said, "Just put the knife down, man." The female officer said, "I swear to God, you're going to be fine if you just drop the knife."

Young did not drop the knife and kept holding the woman hostage. As he pulled the two women down into a corner of the store and threatened to take their lives, Miami Beach Officer Cory Jackson shot him with a single shot. The women ran out of the store and behind them, Officer Jackson was seen visibly shaken from the incident.

An investigation into the officer-involved shooting by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office determined that "Officer Corey Jackson was justified in firing his weapon in defense of others."

On Tuesday, July 20th, Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne Jones released a statement commending Officer Jackson saying in part, "I would like to accentuate Officer Corey Jackson's courageous actions. (They) were instrumental in preserving the lives of two hostages." At the time of the incident, Shanell Santiago, who works at SEE Eyewear, said that he heard gunshots a few doors down from his store.

He said, "Bam, bam, bam! Knocks on my door. 'Let's go, let's go, get out, get out, let's run. Close the doors, close everything, get out of the shop.'" Santiago Herrera, another witness, said he also heard the gunfire. He said, "All I hear is, 'pa, pa, pa.'" He said that he evacuated a restaurant as the incident occurred. He added, "All of the people started running here and when I go back, when I go out, the police officers were sending all of the people back."

Santiago said, "And the cop was the one who actually initiated the shots, which is great. Obviously why we have law enforcement to protect us and serve." The two women who were held hostage were not injured during the incident.

Good news! One less worthless rat in the world. The officers deserve a reward for eliminating him.
