WASHINGTON, D.C.—An unidentified driver slammed an SUV into the East Gate of the White House according to a statement released by a spokesman for the United States Secret Service. The "cause and manner" of the incident are currently under investigation, Secret Service Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi told reporters.

According to The Daily Caller, President Joe Biden was not in the White House or on the grounds at the time of the incident as he was traveling from South Carolina to Texas attending the funeral proceedings for the late Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson.

In a series of statements posted to X, Guglielmi wrote, "Shortly before 6p.m., a vehicle collided with an exterior gate on the White House complex. The driver has been taken into custody & we are investigating the cause & manner of the collision. Expect traffic implications at 15th Street & Pennsylvania Ave & adjacent intersections."

In an update less than an hour later he added, "The vehicle has been cleared by Washington DC Police Department and traffic closures will be lifted. Driver remains in custody and our investigation continues. Special thanks to @DCPoliceDept @dcfireems for your unwavering support and partnership."

Rawsreports noted in a report posted to X, "numerous law enforcement along with Secret Service personnel are on the scene at the White House Grounds in Washington, D.C. After an unauthorized vehicle crashed into the northwest side of the White House Grounds gate, an investigation into a suspicious package is underway."
