OREM, UT – Conservative influencer Charlie Kirk has died after being shot in what is being largely being perceived as an assassination while headlining an event at Utah Valley University on September 10th.
Kirk was speaking into the microphone while responding to an audience member’s question when the shot rang out, appearing to strike Kirk in the neck.
Video footage of the incident has made the rounds online, with the incident causing immediate concern regarding Kirk’s condition. Various sources have confirmed that Kirk died while being treated at an area hospital following the shooting.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest of a suspect shortly after the incident, but later confirmed on social media that the subject initially apprehended was "released after an interrogation by law enforcement," and assured the public that the search for the suspect is actively ongoing.
Video footage depicting an older white male being taken into custody at the venue of the incident has been shared on social media, although local law enforcement officials have stated that despite the aforementioned video, no suspects are in custody.
President Donald Trump issued a statement in light of the news, posting the following on Truth Social, “The great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”
An MSNBC contributor, Matthew Dowd, suggested Kirk’s fatal shooting was brought on by his political activism, saying the following on air shortly after the incident, “But following up with what was just said, he's been one of the most divisive, especially divisive younger figures in this, who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech - or sort of - aimed at certain groups. And I always go back to hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions.”
