Chicago Officer and Two Others Shot After Late-Night South Side Altercation

CHICAGO, IL – An investigation is ongoing after Chicago Police responded to what local reports described as an “altercation” between two individuals earlier in December in the city’s South Side, with the ensuing police response resulting in one officer and the two individuals being non-fatally shot.

On December 7th at approximately 12:54 a.m., Chicago Police officers were dispatched to the 11400 block of South Davol Street after 911 dispatchers reported a call came in regarding an individual who said their neighbor was at their door with a gun, according to CBS News.

When officers arrived at the scene, they reportedly observed a group of people involved in some sort of altercation and attempted to separate the individuals. While officers were attempting to break up the fight, authorities say a 35-year-old man’s firearm went off, striking one officer and an 18-year-old victim.

Another officer on scene reportedly returned fire at the armed suspect, striking the 35-year-old while also accidentally striking the 18-year-old victim with the return gunfire. The identities of the individuals and officers involved have yet to be revealed by officials as of this writing.

The officer struck during the incident was transported to an area hospital and has since been discharged due to the fired round hitting the protective vest the officer was wearing.

As for the victim and suspect injured during the incident, the 18-year-old was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center and was last listed as being in fair condition, and the 35-year-old was reported as being in fair condition after being transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center.

An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability as well as the police department’s Investigative Response Team. As per standard protocol, the officers involved have been placed on administrative duties for a period of at least 30 days as the investigation plays out.
