Chicago's mayor blames 'migrant' crisis (in his "sanctuary city") on Texas Gov. Abbott

Chicago, IL - Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson recently said that Texas Governor Greg Abbott "needs to take a look in the mirror of the chaos he is causing for this country," referring to the "migrant" crisis that's overwhelming the city.

Johnson has recently made several statements regarding Governor Abbott's decision to send immigrants to Chicago. In Monday's press conference, Johnson accused Abbott of "attacking our country" and "causing chaos" by sending migrants to Chicago and other cities.

Mayor Johnson has also criticized the way migrants are being transported to Chicago, claiming that they are being "dropped off without coordination" and that the conditions in which they are arriving are "quite disturbing." He has also claimed that migrants are arriving in Chicago "sick" and "traumatized."

In the past, Mayor Johson has said, "We are a sanctuary city. There's an incredible history of the city of Chicago being a welcoming space for families across the country and across the world."

In November, the city said it would be "creating pathways to resettlement, community integration, and reunification" when it announced another phase of its New Arrivals Mission.

This week, Johnson said Abbott is to blame for the city's crisis and that Chicago is overwhelmed.

Mayor Johnson told reporters, "The issue is not just how we respond in the city of Chicago. It's the fact that we have a governor, A governor, an elected official in the state of Texas, that is placing families on buses without shoes, cold, wet, tired, hungry, afraid, traumatized.

"And then they come to the city of Chicago, where we have homelessness. We have mental health clinics that have been shut down, and closed. You have people who are seeking employment. The governor of Texas needs to take a look in the mirror at the chaos that he is causing for this country. This is not just a Chicago dynamic. He is attacking our country."

Last week, the Chicago city council voted 16-31 against letting the voters decide for themselves what the future should hold for its sanctuary city designation.
