What Really Happened to the Arizona Girl Who Vanished in 1994

GILA COUNTY, AZ – Nearly 32 years after Christina Marie Plante went missing in May of 1994 at the age of 13, investigators attached to the cold case recently discovered Plante alive and well, learning the truth behind her strange disappearance from decades earlier.

A cold case has officially been closed out of Gila County, Arizona, regarding a missing persons case that involved a teenage girl who was supposedly abducted. Yet, in the case of now 44-year-old Christina Marie Plante, what appeared to be a possible abduction back in May of 1994 turned out to be a runaway case where the suspected victim opted to not be found by authorities.

Gila County Sheriff’s Captain Jamie Garrett broke the news on the case earlier in April, admitting to being “dumbfounded” when modern advances in investigation techniques led authorities to the doorstep of Plante’s home and learned the truth from the woman who never wanted to return home.

“I guess she wasn’t happy with where she was living and who she was living with and she ran away,” Captain Garrett stated during an appearance on NewsNation on April 2nd, adding, “I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh. Okay, so you ran away.’ I told her… ‘You know, we were under the impression that somebody kidnapped you. It was deemed a criminal offense.’”

Plante had reportedly told investigators that she’d willingly left her home, aided by other family members in the process, and had been living under a different name for years. The sheriff’s captain stated that Plante said that it “was a long time ago” and it’s “not something she even thinks about” these days.

Officials are not revealing any additional details regarding the case, particularly the reasons why Plante fled from her family as a juvenile, saying the discretion is “out of respect for Christina’s privacy and well-being.” However, officials have confirmed Plante has her own family now and has moved on from whatever the circumstances were that led to her running away.
