BOULDER COUNTY, CO- “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.” Such is the case of a Colorado man who found that out the hard way.
Law & Crime reports that a 27-year-old Colorado man escaped with his life after his estranged girlfriend decided to open up on him with a firearm as he exited his vehicle on Feb. 5, 2025, in a shooting police said had been planning for weeks. Last week, she learned her fate.
On the date in question, police in Longmont, Colorado, were dispatched just before 9:00 p.m. after the victim called to say he had been shot several times. Officers learned that when the victim opened the door to exit his car after a night out, he was shot “point blank at least six times.”
Despite suffering gunshot wounds to the face, shoulder, arm, and thigh, he survived. While he initially wasn’t sure who had shot him, his suspicions led him to his ex-girlfriend, Duy Nguyen, 26. The two dated for a time, but broke up a few months before the shooting.
Nguyen’s car was identified by police using automated license plate recognition (ALPR) technology, and from shell casings recovered at the shooting scene. Police executed a search warrant at Nguyen’s home and recovered the gun used in the shooting, as well as electronic devices that showed she had been “planning the shooting for weeks.”
Last week, Nguyen was sentenced to 40 years in jail after she was convicted in December of first-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault, according to the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office.
“The reason we’re here on an attempted murder sentencing instead of a first-degree murder sentencing is only because, by sheer luck, the victim survived the defendant shooting him six times, including once in the face at point-blank range,” Boulder County Deputy District Attorney Brad Sherman said in a statement supplied to the Daily Camera. “The court’s sentence of 40 years accurately reflects the defendant’s culpability in this case, and hopefully brings a measure of justice and closure to the victim.’
The victim’s identity was not disclosed.
