Connecticut Democrats Demand ID for Returning Bottles But Say Voter ID Is 'Racist'

HARTFORD, CT - Pity the voters of Connecticut, or at least the sane ones who don’t pull the lever for Democrats. Connecticut, as is much of the northeast, is governed exclusively by far-left Democrats. No, not your “run-of-the-mill” far-left Democrats, but the unhinged lunatic fringe of the Democrat Party.

Connecticut is home to the self-important windbag Sen. Christopher Murphy, stolen valor champion Sen. Richard Blumenthal, and ancient fossils Reps. John Larson, Joseph Courtney, and bag lady Rep. Rosa DeLauro, all Democrats. All stand in staunch opposition to the SAVE America Act, which would require voters to present photo identification in order to vote, as do a majority of Democratic state legislators.

So, what is worth showing a photo ID for? Recycling bottles and cans. The stupidity is mind-boggling.

Connecticut Democrats are so “concerned about the environment” that they voted to impose a 10-cent deposit on bottles and cans sold in the state, a higher rate than neighboring states such as New York, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. So, what happened? Residents of those adjoining states started returning their bottles and cans to redemption locations in Connecticut.

The environmental impact of bottles and cans littering the landscape is being used as a convenient excuse for imposing the 10-cent deposit on recyclables.

What is it really about? What is it always about?

Money.

And Democrats could not abide by that.

The New York Post reported that last month, the legislature rushed through an “emergency bill,” SB 299, which was passed in both chambers of the legislature and signed into law by Gov. Ned Lamont on March 3.

That bill requires anyone wishing to recycle cans or bottles for money to present a copy of their driver’s license proving they are a Connecticut resident. Yet Lamont and Democrat lawmakers have accused Congress of implementing “Jim Crow 2.0” by requiring photo identification to vote in our elections, perhaps the most significant right Americans enjoy.

You read that correctly: requiring photo ID to vote is disenfranchising blacks and women, the equivalent of Jim Crow 2.0–but requiring photo ID to make sure Connecticut doesn’t lose its precious deposit money is just peachy keen. The excuse was that the state was losing “significant revenue.”

In Connecticut, voters do not already have to present photo identification to vote. All that is required is for voters to attest “under penalty of law” that they are citizens of the United States and present some form of documentation that they live where they say they do. Utility bills, cellphone bills, and the like are all sufficient means of “identification.”

In the case of Smurphy and Blumenfool, both recently voted against the SAVE America Act. The hypocrisy of Connecticut Democrats was not lost on some who support voter ID measures.

“In Connecticut, it seems that they are committed to securing recycling, but not to securing elections,” said Anna Pingel, America First Policy Institute’s Campaign Director for Secure Elections. “Requiring photo ID to collect cash from recycling but opposing photo ID to cast a vote tells you everything you need to know about the hypocrisy of politicians fighting against commonsense legislation like the SAVE Act. What is more important to safeguard–bottles or ballots?”

Fox News Digital reached out to Blumenthal, Murphy, and Lamont for comment; however, Blumenthal was the only one who responded.

“Let’s be very clear: the SAVE America Act requires a birth certificate or passport to register to vote, which Republicans know 21 million Americans do not have,” Blumenthal bloviated. “This is not a voter identification bill. It is a voter purge bill.”

Blumenthal is, of course, full of it. Photo identification is required to open a bank account, pick up prescription medication, get a doctor’s appointment, buy a car, fly, and perform all manner of day-to-day activities. In other words, Blumenthal is full of it.

The bill has already passed the U.S. House but is being held up in the Senate because it hasn’t passed the 60-vote “silent filibuster” threshold, which ironically, when Biden was president, Democrats called a throwback to the Jim Crow era as well. Now that Democrats are in the minority, they are more than happy to invoke the filibuster.

Democrats have also shut down the Department of Homeland Security primarily over attempts to tie the hands of ICE agents and mandate certain locations where ICE agents would theoretically be blocked from enforcement actions, including polling places. Considering Democrats such as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) have said that illegal aliens don’t vote, one must be curious why they are so concerned about ICE operations at polling locations. In other words, they’re saying the quiet part out loud.

And they have signaled that they are fine with burdening American citizens trying to fly out of our nation’s airports, endangering the flying public while leaving us vulnerable to terrorist attacks.

But you better believe they'll bend over backward defending illegal alien gang-banging criminals.

But hey, make sure you show ID when you’re trying to cash in those bottles and cans in Connecticut. Wouldn’t want the state to miss out on those dimes.
