‘Sexsomnia’ Defense Falls Flat For Brutal Rapist Learns His Fate

LEICESTER, ENGLAND – A 32-year-old man originally from the small English town of Braunstone was sentenced to over a decade in prison in the U.K. after being convicted of rape, where the defendant attempted to defend himself in court by claiming he committed the violent acts in his sleep.

On August 5th, convicted rapist Dean Final was sentenced to eleven years and eight months behind bars by the Leicester Crown Court, with an additional three years added to the aforementioned sentence. Final had reportedly engaged in two physically abusive relationships prior to his indictment and sentencing, with one of the victims having been sexually assaulted on two separate occasions.

According to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Final was involved in a relationship with one victim in Leicester where the two lived together, which said relationship turned “controlling” in a matter of weeks. In the wake of the verdict and sentencing, CPS shared in a statement, “[Final] regularly stole or hid her phone or keys to restrict her movements, placed cameras around the house to control what she was doing, bombarded her with messages and accused her of cheating on him.”

When the woman confronted Final about his controlling behavior back in February 2024, CPS says Final proceeded to sexually assault the women over the next two nights. When the victim contacted police about the sexual assaults, she told investigators that Final’s eyes were closed during both assaults, which led her to believe he may’ve been asleep.

This passing observation made by the victim would later be used by Final in his legal defense, claiming he suffered from a condition referred to as “sexsomnia,” however, this attempt at a legal defense was ultimately shut down by the courts.

In a separate abusive relationship Final was reportedly involved in, CPS presented evidence of a similar pattern of behavior with a victim out of Lancashire. In this second relationship, Final reportedly engaged in much of the same “controlling or coercive behaviour,” per CPS’ press release, as well as having “turned violent towards his partner’s pet dog.”

With respect to the victim from Leicester, the Leicester Crown Court found Final guilty of two counts of rape and a single count of controlling and coercive behavior.

As for the Lancashire victim, Final was found guilty of controlling and coercive behavior, intentional strangulation, three counts of assault causing bodily harm, and causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal.

NO! He should be executed!

I agree. I fully support the death penalty for violent crimes like this one. If we'd use it, instead of housing violent predators and then turning them loose on society once again, we'd have less re-offending upon release. In addition, the money currently used to house these people could be channeled into mental health services for teens and young people to hopefully prevent them from becoming violent predators.
