BRYAN, OH- Newly released dash-cam video shows the moments when an infant was tossed from a van during a police chase in Ohio. According to 6ABC, the incident took place on December 1st, at approximately 9:30 p.m. when an individual with an arrest warrant was recognized.
Police said that 32-year-old Zachary Chervenka of Butler, Indiana, was at a Walmart near Toledo when he was spotted. An officer approached Chervenka as he was in the driver's seat with his nine-month-old and five-year-old children in the back seat. Video shows the mother loading groceries into the van when he decided to speed off.
Chervenka left the children's mother behind and a police pursuit ensued. He allegedly reached speed of up to 100 miles per hour with the van door wide open and children in the backseat. Video of the police pursuit show the nine-month-old child fly out of the van as the man makes a round turn.
The boy bounced multiple times while still in his car seat, which the officer did not see. Minutes later, police said they ended the pursuit because of the bad weather. Chervenka then allegedly called the children's mother, saying he dropped the five-year-old off at a friend's house.
He then described the area where the nine-month-old was ejected from the van. Police said the infant was found after about an hour of being left in the cold, still strapped into his car seat. As she reunited with her son, the mother can be heard saying, "Oh my God, that's the car seat there! Oh God, please let me out."
The mom dashes out of the police cruiser in tears. "Baby boy! Baby boy! Oh, mama's got you. He's so cold. Baby. OK, mama's here, mama's here. Oh baby, my baby. I'm so sorry, baby. Mama's got you." According to WTVM, a police report said that an ER doctor told police the infant's "body temperature was extremely low and could have been life-threatening if he was left out in the cold for much longer."
The baby was taken to the hospital to be checked out and is expected to be OK. The other child was also found safe at their friend's house. Chervenka was arrested the very next day. Authorities said an officer and a police K9 apprehended Chervenka at an apartment complex in Edgerton. He told officers he was scared and admitted made a dumb decision.
He has been charged with child endangerment, assault, failure to comply, car theft, and other charges. He is being held at the local jail without bail. Online records show that Chervenka was wanted on several arrest warrants at the time of the police pursuit, including for assault and burglary.
