Virginia's Sanctuary Policies Put Children at Risk After Latest Child Assault Arrest, DHS Says

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA- On March 30, 2026, Woodbridge, Virginia police investigated a sexual assault that occurred inside a residence. The investigation showed that an illegal alien, Nahun Aleman Hernandez had sexually assaulted a five-year-old girl while she was being cared for by a babysitter at the home. After an investigation, police arrested Hernandez on June 3 and charged him with aggravated sexual battery, a news release from the Department of Homeland Security said.

Now, the DHS has lodged an immigration against Hernandez, an El Salvadoran national and is asking far-left (not a moderate) Gov. Abigail Spanberger, a Democrat, to not release him from jail.

“This monster is charged with molesting a 5-year-old girl while she was at her babysitter’s house,” Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said. “This illegal alien never should’ve been allowed in our country to commit this heinous crime. We are calling on Governor Abigail Spanberger and her fellow sanctuary politicians to commit to not releasing this criminal from jail and cooperate with ICE so that he can never again assault an innocent child. Governor Spanberger’s refusal to work with ICE has made Virginians less safe and the commonwealth a magnet for illegal alien crime. Sanctuary politicians must stop playing Russian roulette with American lives.”

Hernandez entered the United States illegally at an unknown time and location, although he admitted after being taken into custody that he entered the country through Texas in 2003.

Spanberger, who ran for governor as a moderate, veered far to the left almost immediately after being sworn in, signing executive orders banning state cooperation with ICE and terminating all 287(g) state and local agreements.

Under Spanberger’s watch, illegal alien crime has exploded in the state, including the following:

  • In June, ICE lodged a detainer for Cristian Wilfredo Alvarenga Aguilar, a criminal illegal alien charged with carjacking, abduction, assault, and robbery in Herndon, VA.

  • In May, a Guatemalan illegal alien, Arnoldo Santos-Velasques was sentenced to 25 years in prison in Loudoun County for sexually assaulting an eight-year-old girl

  • Another El Salvadoran illegal alien, Cristian Romero Saenz-Argueta was arrested in May in Prince William County and charged with raping a girl under the age of fifteen

  • Also in May, ICE lodged a detainer for Jorge Enrique Garcia-Rodriguez, a Mexican illegal alien, who was arrested in Franklin County and charged with forcible intercourse with a victim under the age of thirteen and six counts of child pornography

  • Again in May, a Cuban illegal, Eduardo Perez-Legra was picked up by ICE; he had prior felony convictions for drug trafficking and cocaine possession in Newport News

  • ICE arrested Walvin Victor Hugo Garcia, an illegal from Guatemala in May after he was released by sanctuary politicians in Fairfax County despite being charged with raping a child under thireen years of age

  • In May, ICE arrested Josue Saul Garcia-Lopez, an illegal alien from El Salvador and MS-13 gang banger in Harrisonburg, Virginia

  • In April, Roni Mendez-Escobar, a Guatemalan illegal alien, was arrested by ICE after previously being released by Fairfax County after being charged with possession of child porn with intent to distribute

  • In April, ICE lodged a detainer asking sanctuary politicians in Arlington County to detain Luzvin Orvando Garcia Moran, a Guatemalan illegal, after he was arrested for attempted rape

  • Also in April in Fairfax County, Israel Christopher Flores-Ortiz, a criminal illegal alien from El Salvador, was convicted of nine counts of assault and battery after groping multiple underage girls at a Fairfax County high school

  • In an egregious abuse of the criminal justice system, the Fairfax County District Attorney’s Office gave a plea deal of only five years to two illegal aliens who murdered a man at an Oakton, Virginia park and walking trail in July 2024

  • In April, Misael Lopez Gomez, a Guatemalan illegal alien, was arrested and charged with murder and child abuse for bludgeoning his own 3-month-old daughter to death, again in Fairfax County

  • In March, Anibal Armando Chavarria Muy, another Guatemalan illegal, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder for stabbing a man inside his home in Bailey’s Crossroads

  • Finally in February, Abdul Jalloh, an illegal alien from Sierra Leone with over 30 prior arrests was charged with murder after stabbing 41-year-old Stephanie Minter to death at a bus stop in Hybla Valley, Virginia.

These heinous crimes were committed in one state over a period of under four months, yet this is who sanctuary politicians such as Abigail Spanberger are trying to protect.
