How did this happen? DHS secretary Noem's purse stolen with $3K inside it - right from under her

WASHINGTON, D.C. - As the nation's capital continues to face crime issues, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem's purse was stolen with thousands in cash while at a restaurant with her family on Sunday evening, April 20th.

According to Fox News, a DHS agency spokesperson said that the purse was snatched by a white man wearing a mask. The purse reportedly contained $3,000 in cash as well as personal documents including her passport, keys, driver's license, and a DHS badge.

When questioned why Noem had so much money on her, the agency spokesperson said, "Her entire family was in town including her children and grandchildren. She was using the withdrawal to treat her family to dinner, activities, and Easter gifts."

CBS News reported that the security camera footage shows the white male wearing a medical mask during the theft. The individual was not immediately spotted by her Secret Service detail, with the bag being discovered lost by Noem herself. Two sources familiar with the incident said that Noem was dining at The Capital Burger, a popular and busy locale near D.C.'s downtown and her purse was placed against her foot underneath her seat.

Her cell phone was not in the purse, but credit cards, makeup and medication, were also among the other items stolen. The DHS secretary, in keeping with her predecessors, receives 24/7 Secret Service protection, and members of her detail were stationed at the restaurant at the time of the incident.

NBC4 reported that during the White House Easter Egg Roll on the South Lawn, Noem told a reporter she could not comment on the matter "yet," but acknowledged that the incident had not been resolved.

Crime in D.C. continues to be a major issue, including theft. In 2024, violent crime hit a 30-year low, as noted by the U.S. Attorney's Office at the time. However, President Donald Trump has put the pressure on Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowers to not only increase law enforcement presence, but to clean up homeless encampments in the city itself.

The president has created a task force with the goal of improving public safety and making it "the pride of every American to whom it belongs." In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, "Washington, D.C., must become CLEAN and SAFE again! We need our Great Police back on the street, with no excuses from the Mayor, or anyone else. The House should take up the D.C. funding "fix" that the Senate has passed, and get it done IMMEDIATELY."

He added, "We need to clear up our once beautiful Capital City, and make it beautiful again. We will be TOUGH ON CRIME, like never before. I will work with the Mayor on this and, if it does not happen, will have no choice but to do it myself. Washington, D.C., will be better, safer, and more beautiful than ever before!"

The task force includes various law enforcement goals, including aiming to "keep dangerous criminals off the streets by strengthening pre-trial detention policies."
