MIAMI, FL - Dan Halloran, a former New York City Councilman whose political career abruptly ended with a 2014 conviction for taking part in Bribery and Fraud schemes, was arrested at Miami International Airport on Saturday on a return flight from Cuba. Halloran was taken into custody by US Customs and Border Protection agents after they searched his phone and uncovered 1,362 child sex videos of approximately 35 “prepubescent” girls being sexually abused.
A federal complaint from the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida revealed that the 54-year-old was flagged for “secondary search” and admitted to “knowingly” having the disturbing material on his device, according to The New York Post. He allegedly purchased the horrifying videos via the messaging application Telegram.
According to The Miami Herald, a search of his phone revealed a text conversation showing he purchased the videos, “which came in regular, premium, VIP or special packages that ranged in price from $50 to $500,” citing the federal complaint.
Halloran was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in two bribery and embezzlement schemes and an attempt to rig the New York City Mayoral election, according to the Department of Justice. However, due to efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19, he only served about half of his sentence. He held office as a Republican City Councilman from 2010-2013.
Local 10 News reported that Halloran has been living in Floral Park, New York, and working as a Dive Instructor, and his social media accounts showed he was on a diving trip at the Jardines de la Reina National Park near Camagüey, Cuba.
The suspect was first booked at the Broward County Main Jail before being transferred to the Federal Detention Center in Miami on Tuesday. He is now facing two federal charges of possession of child pornography and transportation of child pornography and is set to be prosecuted in the Miami Federal Court. A pretrial detention hearing is scheduled for Friday, and his arraignment is set for April 14.
