SAN ANTONIO, TX – Two officers with the San Antonion Police Department (SAPD) were shot during a domestic disturbance call around 7:30pm on Thursday.
The incident took place in the 1600 block of Amistad Pass on the Northeast Side. The two injured officers were the first to arrive on scene. According to SAPD Chief William McManus, they have both been hospitalized with what he described as “serious injuries.”
Reports say that Jesus Prado, 40, was in an argument with his wife when he came to the house to pick up his kids. At some point during the interaction, Prado threatened to set the house on fire. While the argument heated up, Prado started pouring gasoline in the home.
When one of the two officers standing outside the house called for backup, Prado shot both officers through a second story window with a long gun. One officer collapsed after being shot three times, and the other took cover behind a parked vehicle after he was shot once. He fired back while Prado continued shooting at the officers.
When more officers arrived and got both injured men to safety, Prado exited the house and turned himself in without further incident.
While both officers are alive, their condition is currently unknown following several surgeries. “These types of calls are very, very volatile,” Chief McManus said. “They’re very dangerous because of the emotion involved. The officers are very, very lucky that they weren’t killed.”
The chief also said the suspect’s wife and children were unharmed.
According to jail records, Prado has been charged with two counts of attempted capital murder of a police officer, as well as one count of deadly conduct. His bonds are set in total at $3 million.
