WASHINGTON, DC – The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) recently released an outline for their program dubbed “Workers Deserve More,” which aims to entice would-be DSA proponents with a world where rent and mortgages don’t exist and the government, including its branches, is radically overhauled alongside ending capitalism.
In the DSA’s latest iteration of their Workers Deserve More platform, the opening line prominently featured on the webpage reads, “Imagine taking a day off from work in a future without capitalism,” thereafter dovetailing into a romanticized version of de facto communism. While political pundits have espoused concerns about communism seeping into American politics over the past decade with the rise of political figures and elected officials like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, it’s hardly hyperbolic to label the DSA as communism with a new coat of paint.
According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, communism is defined as a “political and economic doctrine that aims to replace private property and a profit-based economy with public ownership and communal control of at least the major means of production (e.g., mines, mills, and factories) and the natural resources of a society.”
In the DSA’s own words, their goal is to accomplish the aforementioned while enshrining the political endeavor as a utopia where no one will ever have bills because everything meaningful is magically funded by the public.
“You have no debt. You don’t need health insurance. You don’t pay a mortgage or have a landlord, because comfortable housing is a human right. Your retirement is publicly funded. Food, education, energy, medicine, and transportation aren’t for-profit businesses; they are common goods and utilities,” reads the DSA’s updated Workers Deserve More platform in part.
In this purported utopia, the DSA further claims that when someone isn’t working their controlled 32-hour work week, individuals can use their days off for things like eating out at restaurants or “maybe go to the movies,” yet in the same diatribe regarding this imagined future, the DSA claims they want to see “the end of capitalism.”
Also contained within the laundry list of sought-after policies are things like enacting reparations, “fully abolishing the police and prison system,” realizing a society where “feminism” is put first, effectively gutting the U.S. military, abolishing ICE and stopping deportations while ending “visa caps and quotas,” and giving voting rights to every resident in the U.S. regardless of whether they’re a citizen or not.
Those aforementioned efforts are a mere drop in the bucket for what the DSA hopes to accomplish, and they aren’t even the most radical. Arguably the most egregious endeavor outlined in the DSA’s Workers Deserve More platform is a complete overhaul of the three branches of government and how our country is fundamentally run.
“Replace the two-party system with a multi-party democracy. Expand the House of Representatives, implement proportional representation and ranked choice voting in all elections, and abolish the Senate,” the DSA’s Workers Deserve More platform reads in part.
Expanding on the governmental branches’ shakeup, the DSA proposes that alongside an abolished Senate, the president would instead be chosen by the expanded House of Representatives, and the Supreme Court would be replaced by a curated judiciary, also selected by the House.
While the DSA, and their ideals, may feel like fringe political theory and wishful thinking, the group – and their candidates – are already making waves and have some of their members in office. To date, there are over 200 elected officials across the state, local, and federal levels who were either endorsed by or are members of the DSA. While Representatives Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib, along with Mayor Zohran Mamdani, are arguably the most nationally recognized figures behind the DSA, their foothold spans across everything from various local schoolboards to city councils.
