FORT WORTH, TX - Earlier this week, Law Enforcement Today reported on a line of duty death involving a Fort Worth Police Sergeant and an alleged intoxicated driver. Now, LET has learned that an organization is collecting donations on behalf of his family.
Fort Worth Police Department (FWPD) Sergeant Billy Randolph was struck by a vehicle on I-35 West while he worked to clear a traffic accident involving an 18-wheeler that caught on fire. The 25-year-old driver plowed through barricades set up for officers' protection while they worked the scene.
Assist the Officer- Fort Worth (ATO) is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization set up to assist officers in need. In this case, donations made will assist Sgt. Randolph's family with financial support as they adjust to their new reality without their provider.
According to ATO's website, "Assist the Officer was founded so that when a death, unexpected illness, or serious injury occurs while doing the job they love, the community can give back to those, and the families of those, who protect it...ATO Fort Worth provides financial assistance to law enforcement officers injured in the line of duty or facing catastrophic loss to include severe illness."
ATO's board consists of three police officers, one detective, and one sergeant.
Sgt. Randolph was a 29-year veteran of FWPD and served in the United States Air Force before that. He was married to his wife, Lisa, for 35 years and had one daughter, and one son who died before him. He also had four grandchildren.
