STUART, FL – Authorities out of Martin County, Florida, arrested a 77-year-old mail carrier earlier in July after law enforcement reportedly recovered nearly 100 animals from the woman’s home, with locals suspecting the mail carrier of being behind some of the mysterious disappearances of their household cats.
On July 20th, Martin County Sheriff’s deputies happened upon a catastrophic residence within the Foxwood community of Stuart, Florida, where deputies reportedly recovered 92 animals from the home of 77-year-old Gail Giustino. Authorities reportedly rescued 80 cats and 12 dogs from the elderly mail carrier’s residence, with the animals allegedly having been contained in “squalor conditions,” according to Sheriff John Budensiek.
“These are squalor conditions; this is a nice house, nice neighborhood, but the conditions are horrific. We're talking about in some places a foot of animal feces in that house. There is no air conditioning in that house. So, when we cracked the door on it earlier today, the stench was unreal, the air was stifling hot,” Sheriff Budensiek said of the case.
Officials say law enforcement have made past attempts to gain entry to Giustino’s home for approximately a week prior to her July 20th arrest, but the subject was reportedly uncooperative during said prior efforts by law enforcement. Official actions against Giustino regarding alleged improper care for animals date back to 2015 when she reportedly received over 40 citations for the aforementioned, but the case was later dismissed.
All of the recovered animals have since been transported to the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast for treatment, but questions from locals and officials loom on whether Giustino had acquired said animals during her work as a mail carrier, a position she’s held since 1997.
Megan Remick, an area local whose cat went missing three years earlier, wonders whether Giustino was the individual who pilfered her feline, telling a local news outlet, “I saw one of the rescuers, animal control officers bring out a cage with a tiny white cat in it and I just know there’s other white cats in the world, but man, something just hit me and just the thought that she could have been sitting in that filth, not being able to breathe in a cage for three years, is just absolutely horrifying.”
Another area local, Shannon, is also wondering whether Giustino was the person responsible for her cat coming up missing two weeks earlier, saying, “I looked on the news and saw a video of one of the tuxedo cats inside of the cage that they were taking out of the house, and I’m very hopeful that it’s my cat and I’m really hoping to be reunited with my cat.”
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating whether any of the recovered animals belonged to anyone else and is urging locals to file missing pet reports to assist with the investigation. Giustino is currently facing charges of animal cruelty and confinement of animals without sufficient exercise.
