FORT MYERS BEACH, FL - Reporting released by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in Florida stated 18-year-old Jack Turner was arrested on a Florida beach and is now facing felony battery charges after he allegedly bit off another man’s ear during a St. Patrick’s Day altercation that devolved into a brawl.
As reported by Fox News, deputies patrolling the seaside of Fort Myers Beach were summoned by bystanders to a fight at approximately 5:00 p.m. and were brought to the victim, identified as Juwan Black, who told the officers that he was involved in a physical altercation and that his attacker had bitten off a portion of his left ear.
Gulf Coast News obtained bystander footage of the fight. The bystander who took the video told reporters that she could hear the suspect unloading a series of racial invectives at the victim before attacking him from behind.
Lee County deputies reviewed the video as evidence and confirmed that it showed Turner mounting the victim's back as he lay face down in the sand and striking him in the back of the head with a closed-fisted blow. He is then seen gripping the victim's head by the turf of his hair and pushing it forcibly into the sand before pulling it up and appearing to bite his ear causing what the report referred to as "traumatic auricular amputation.”
The victim reportedly received medical treatment and will be seen by a specialist for his injuries. Turner was arrested on felony battery charges and booked by officers into the Lee County Jail.
A Sheriff’s Office spokesman said in a statement from Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno that the office has “zero tolerance for violence of any kind,” on the city’s beaches. "Sheriff Carmine Marceno has ZERO tolerance for violence of any kind! Fort Myers Beach will continue to remain safe for all visitors and residents of Lee County!" the statement continued.
Following the brawl, the Sheriff’s Office announced additional patrols in the area in order to "ensure the safety and security of everyone."
