FAIRBANKS, AK -  A former Fairbanks educator, who taught at Hutchison High School and Tanana Middle School, appeared in court Tuesday after he was arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree sexual abuse of a minor.

Fairbanks Police Department’s Public Information Officer Teal Soden told KTUU Tuesday that former teacher Skyler Evans, 33, was taken into custody for sexual abuse of a minor. According to the police complaint, the charges are connected to a foster child in the man’s care at the time of the alleged abuse which occurred in 2021 and 2022.

According to Alaska News Source, the FPD said that Evans was employed by the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District and was the victim’s eighth-grade teacher. He reportedly began tutoring the victim when they told the teacher that they would be rehomed from foster care soon. He then allegedly told the child that he was applying for a foster care license with his wife to foster his student.

A spokesman from the Office of Children’s Services confirmed to the outlet that Evans was a licensed foster care provider as of June 1, 2021, through Nov. 7, 2022. Court documents revealed that the victim moved into the teacher’s home where for approximately a year the living situation was described as normal. But in June 2022, Evans reportedly began sharing a bed with the victim and the alleged sexual abuse began. It would continue according to the victim into high school.

The victim told police that at this point, they began to harm themselves. Mrs. Evans became alerted to the situation and uncovered a letter from Evans to the victim describing his feelings toward them, leading her to summon the Office of Children’s Services. The victim was subsequently removed from Evans’ home.

Despite the victim moving to North Pole to live with their mother, they still visited the Evans’ home to shower and the abuse persisted.

In September, authorities became aware that Evans and the victim were still communicating via SMS text messaging and Snapchat the complaint said. Detectives arrested Evans on Tuesday morning.

Soden told the outlet, “Due to the sensitive nature of the incident, we won’t be releasing any other information.” The investigation is ongoing the FPD said and detectives are seeking to identify any additional victims.
