FORT WAYNE, IN – Officials in Indiana are investigating an officer-involved shooting involving state and local authorities responding to an allegedly armed subject earlier in September, which resulted in the subject being killed and at least one officer being injured.
On the evening of September 12th, officials say an Allen County Sheriff’s deputy noticed a vehicle parked in the area of Schwartz Road and Irving Road at approximately 8:00 p.m., where the deputy reportedly attempted to make contact with the driver of the vehicle. Upon approaching the vehicle, authorities say the deputy observed the subject with a firearm and immediately called for backup.
Officers from the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Indiana State Police, as well as additional deputies from Allen County, arrived shortly after the call for backup came in, leading to the subject eventually exiting their vehicle. Officials say when the subject exited the vehicle, the individual made an “aggressive movement,” leading to several officers and deputies on scene opening fire.
Local CBS affiliate WANE15 described the aftermath of the scene as harboring “up to 30 emergency vehicles,” with the local news outlet’s crew member noting that upon their arrival, “an ambulance was leaving the area with lights and sirens.”
The subject, who has yet to be identified as of this writing, was declared deceased at the scene, and at least one officer from the Fort Wayne Police Department suffered an injury during the incident. The nature and extent of the aforementioned injury suffered by the officer has not been shared by officials at this time.
Indiana State Police are leading the investigation into the fatal shooting. No additional details have been given by any of the other two agencies involved in the incident as of this writing.
