Four New York girls hacked with a meat cleaver saved by heroic 11-year-old calling police

NEW YORK, NY - New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and NYPD Chief of Department John Chell told a news conference Sunday that a 49-year-old man, identified as Lun Chang Chen, was shot and wounded by police officers after they forced entry into a Brooklyn to find him armed with a meat cleaver and covered with blood. He had allegedly just stabbed four young girls believed to be related to him.

The four victims, ages eight, 11, 13, and 16, were reportedly hacked with the meat cleaver when the “heroic” 11-year-old girl dialed 911 and told dispatchers their uncle was attacking them. She was unable to provide an address, Tisch said, but dispatchers were able to trace the call successfully and send help.

"Officers and EMS arrived at the door within minutes of receiving the 911 call. Their fast, decisive action pinpointing the location and taking down the door absolutely saved the lives of these young girls," Tisch said, according to ABC News.

“At that point [the cops] heard screams coming from behind the door to their left and immediately began forcing their way into the apartment, kicking down the door,” Jessica Tisch told reporters during a briefing at the crime scene per The New York Post.

“Once they entered, they encountered a man standing near the entrance holding a large meat cleaver covered with blood, and they could see blood on the floor of the home,” the commissioner said. “The officers ordered the man to drop the weapon several times. He refused and advanced towards them. Tisch described it as a “horrific scene,” per ABC.

“Two officers discharged their firearms, firing seven total rounds between them, striking the subject, ending the threat,” she said.

All four girls suffered from “serious slash and stab wounds” at the hands of their attacker but were rushed to nearby Maimonides Medical Center and are expected to recover. “This could have ended very differently,” Tisch told reporters.

Chen was also rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. According to the Commissioner, a fifth child, a little boy, fled the apartment and ran for help while Chen allegedly attacked the girls. “Right now we know there were five children, four hurt,” she said per the Post. “This might be the father of some of them or the uncle. And, again, we’re going to work through that. And we believe the mother was out of the house.”

NYPD Chief of Department John Chell told the gathered reporters that the motives behind the attack are still under investigation but added that Chen’s family told police that the man has a history of mental illness.
