Maine police officer deliberately struck by car - now he and his family need our help

NORWAY, ME - On June 25, 2024, Oxford Police Department Reserve Sergeant Joe Correia was deliberately struck by a vehicle, the Maine Department of Public Safety said in a release. The Maine State Police responded to the incident and arrested 29-year-old Michael Carleton of Paris in connection with the incident, News Center Maine reported.

Correia was off-duty at the time of the incident, which police determined was deliberate. Carleton was charged with aggravated assault and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, authorities said.

Now, a GoFundMe has been set up to assist Correia with medical bills as a result of the attack. The fundraiser’s description said Correia was unloading his vehicle with his seven-year-old son after a day at the beach. Correia was left “with several injuries that will require surgery to his face and an extended recovery period.”

“Sgt. Correia is a veteran law enforcement officer with over 12 years of service. He is known for his dedication to public service and his commitment to keeping his community safe. This devastating incident occurred while he was off-duty, and the Maine State Police are currently investigating it and have made an arrest.”

According to Cassidy Correia, the organizer, the medical bills and related recovery costs “will place a financial burden on Sgt. Correia and his family.”

“This GoFundMe campaign has been established to help cover his hospital fees, surgery, physical therapy, and other expenses during this difficult time as he focuses on healing,” the fundraiser read.

Law Enforcement Today is happy to publicize this fundraiser to assist this officer in overcoming the unwarranted attack upon him and pray for his full recovery.
