How Deputy Greg Sanders and His K9 Companion Serve With Bravery and Heart

For Deputy Greg Sanders, law enforcement has been more than a career choice. It’s been a journey defined by persistence, dedication, and the bond with a dog named Morgan.

Sanders, now serving with the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, began his career in 2011 with the Belmont County Sheriff’s Office in Ohio. While he thrived there, his sights were set on the dream of joining a K9 criminal interdiction unit.

When the opportunity didn’t come in Ohio, Sanders moved west to Arizona, where he worked relentlessly to prove himself.

“Within my first year, year and a half, I was selected to be on the canine criminal interdiction unit. I’ve been on that for the last three years now. So it’s been great,” Sanders said.

His partner, Morgan, is a five-year-old Belgian Malinois with boundless energy. The dual-purpose K9 handles both narcotics detection and apprehension. Sanders admits Morgan’s drive can be a challenge, but it’s also what makes him an incredible asset.

“He’s 100 percent work all the time, but he’s also very friendly to people,” Sanders said. “When I bring him out, he’ll let you pet him. It’s challenging, it’s rewarding, and it’s awesome to have him.”

Outside of duty, Sanders enjoys Arizona’s wide-open spaces, often off-roading, camping, or fishing with his kids. For Morgan, downtime means tug-of-war, park runs, and well-deserved rest.

Sanders also noticed stark cultural differences between Ohio and Arizona. “Family is a big deal with the Latino culture out here,” he said.

“Back home, yeah, family is important, but out here, that culture, that’s very important to them. The mountains, the scenery, you never get tired of it.”
