LAS VEGAS, NV - Sometimes it takes a good guy with a gun to take out someone intent on doing people harm. Such is the case in Las Vegas where a Good Samaritan did just that, likely preventing a man from killing a number of people.
Las Vegas Metro police said that a man, who was not identified, showed up for his job with a home remodeling firm and was declared "unfit" to work. He was subsequently fired by his employer. That led the man to go on an unhinged rampage, with him getting into his SUV and driving recklessly down the street, RVM News reported. Some residents who were out on the streets and sidewalks had to dive out of harm’s way.
One resident told reporters about the incident.
“He was trying to hit somebody, and it was either going to be me or the kid or whoever’s standing in that road,” said Richard Osayna.
However, the incident was not without victims. Two men were struck by the suspect’s SUV, including his now-former boss, with the incident happening in Osayna’s driveway.
After striking the two men, the suspect turned his SUV toward Osayna, forcing him to jump over a wall to avoid being struck. He also said the suspect made a slashing gesture across his throat, which he took as a threat to slash his (Osayna’s) throat.
“That’s when he tried to hit me and I ended up jumping the wall,” he said. “He jumped the curb and pretty much looked at me and gave a…gave a slash throat sign to me.”
Osayna continued, saying, “My neighbor is a hero, my neighbor saved the day.”
The incident lasted until the Good Samaritan, who was a neighbor, intervened with a shotgun, preventing further injury. Osayna painted the neighbor, who was not identified, as a hero, crediting him for his quick action that he said saved lives.
According to the neighbor’s grandmother, Annette Tilley, she said her grandson ordered the suspect to stop as the SUV drove quickly toward him. He fired an unknown number of shots killing the suspect, Fox 5 in Las Vegas reported.
“And then, he just drops the gun on the ground, hands on his head, and says, ‘he’s gone,’ and I went ‘you killed him?’” TIlley said.
Las Vegas Metro Police told reporters the case is being referred to the District Attorney’s Office to determine if self-defense played a role in the incident.
Tilley said Metro police officers visited her home after the incident and offered counseling and prayers for her grandson.
Neither the suspect nor the hero shooter were identified by Metro police.
