TRENTON, NJ- After an Assembly Judiciary Committee hearing, GOP lawmakers had a few choice words for New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin, accusing him of failing to release crime statistics.
According to a press release from the New Jersey Assembly GOP, Assemblymen Robert Auth and Gerry Scharfenberger are now calling for Platkin to resign. The last time the state reported criminal statistics, including domestic violence, was in 2020 despite the laws that require this type of reporting.
Before the committee passed a bill creating a domestic violence public awareness campaign, Auth said, "I think it's incumbent upon us to have a chat with him and ask why he is remiss in not getting that report over to us."
On Monday, March 10th, during the hearing, the committee reviewed six domestic violence bills. They pass five unanimously. The measures aim to support victims by expanding counseling for children, prioritizing custody for survivors, strengthening police protections, criminalizing trespassing, allowing victims to take control of their phone accounts, and launching a public awareness campaign.
Auth and Scharfenberger withheld support for a proposed three-year domestic violence court pilot in four counties after a judiciary representative testified that a separate court was unnecessary. Following the hearing, both GOP lawmakers called for Platkin to resign.
Auth said, "He's too busy catering to the national teachers' union and suing Trump to do his actual job. His job is to protect New Jersey residents, not to use the attorney general's office as a stepping stone for political ambition. I am sick and tired of it, and so are the people of this state."
Schargenberger stressed that withholding crime data makes it harder for lawmakers to craft effective policies. He said, "How are we supposed to legislate appropriately when the AG refuses to provide the data required by law? Platkin's refusal to release this information is an abdication of duty; one that puts lives at risk."
Two weeks before the hearing, Assembly Republican leadership, including GOP Leader John DiMaio, Republican Conference Leader Christopher DePhillips and Deputy Leader Antwan McClellan, introduced articles of impeachment against Platkin, arguing he has abused his office for political gain.
The resolution accuses Platkin of using the Division of Criminal Justice and the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability to conduct politically motivated investigations that undermine the New Jersey State Police. As an example, Republicans pointed to his commissioning of an external report on traffic stops. Republicans argued that the report served as a political narrative rather than public safety.
Auth said, "He is failing victims, failing the law, and failing the people of New Jersey. It's time for him to go." The impeachment resolution has an uphill battle as the legislature is controlled by the Democrats. It would require a majority vote in the Assembly, followed by a trial in the Senate overseen by the chief justice of the state Supreme Court, and a two-thirds vote in that chamber.
