How An Explosive Was Found in Alabama Drinking Water Reservoir

MOBILE, AL – Following the discovery and safe detonation of a “grenade type” explosive device found within an Alabama water reservoir, authorities are still investigating the source of the explosive and whether the device was intentionally placed where it was discovered earlier in May.

According to reports, the mysterious device was discovered on May 13th at the Converse Reservoir dam in Mobile County by divers who were tasked with surveying for standard repairs and maintenance.

The workers reportedly contacted law enforcement which in turn prompted a multiagency response of both local and federal law enforcement given the reservoir is deemed critical infrastructure.

Mobile Area Water and Sewer System (MAWSS) notes on their website that the reservoir “provides drinking water for approximately 350,000 MAWSS customers in Mobile and Baldwin Counties,” hence the sizeable law enforcement response to the incident.

Additionally, portions of the reservoir are publicly accessible for recreational activities like fishing and boat rentals.

Republican Senator Katie Britt issued a statement on X expressing gratitude for the swift response to the matter and subsequent safe detonation of the device, highlighting her continued communications with law enforcement officials while the incident remains under investigation.

“We are thankful for the diligent work that led to identifying this device and for the multi-agency response team that was able to detonate the device. Ensuring that our reservoirs remain secure is critical. My team and I have been in contact with state and local officials. We are thankful no one was harmed,” Senator Britt noted.

MAWSS Director Bud McCrory also issued a statement regarding the incident, saying, “Our top priority is keeping your drinking water safe. This is an unprecedented threat, and we are fortunate that this device was discovered before it could cause serious damage to our water supply or harm to individuals.”

Homeland Security has been briefed on the incident and the matter remains under investigation.

Authorities have not shared whether any suspects or persons of interest are on their radar as of this writing. Officials have confirmed that enhanced security measures will be implemented at the reservoir in light of the incident.
