ATLANTA, GA - An Atlanta police officer and an unidentified woman were reportedly found dead inside a home near Piedmont Park earlier in December, with officials currently withholding the identity of the deceased officer. Despite the nature of the discovery, officials say there’s no active threat to the public, and no suspects are being sought at this time.
On December 27th at approximately 4:00 p.m., Atlanta Police Department (APD) officers were reportedly conducting a welfare check at a residence located at 618 Cooledge Avenue when they discovered the two bodies. APD Deputy Chief Prenzinna Spann confirmed one of the decedents was an APD officer, but didn’t expand on the fallen officer’s identity as of this writing.
Authorities did confirm the two deceased individuals died from apparent gunshot wounds, but have not publicly revealed the nature of the relationship between the officer and the unnamed woman. A statement from the department emphasized that no one else was discovered inside the home and that the matter is isolated with no suspects being sought in connection to the incident.
Local media outlet Fox 5 interviewed a neighbor of the deceased officer who described him as a “wonderful guy” and described the overall situation as “heartbreaking.”
“I’m really just shocked; he was a wonderful, wonderful guy,” neighbor George Jackson stated, adding, “The feeling of losing one of your neighbors in such a heartbreaking way is just surreal. Very friendly, peaceful person who always had a smile on his face, always happy to help if you needed an extra hand.”
Officials did note that at the time APD received the call to perform a welfare check, they were unaware they were responding to the home of one of their own officers. APD was reportedly contacted by friends of the deceased to conduct the welfare check after not hearing from the two for an unspecified period of time.
